“I’m coming, and that’s that,” demanded Nathan. His whole body leaned forward and when he concluded, I heard a light thud from down where his feet were.

“Was that a stomp?” I asked.

“No, it was not, and I am coming. End of argument.”

“It sounded like a stomp to me, Nate,” answered Mike. His answer earned him a sneer from Nathan.

I reached out and grabbed his hands, holding back a snicker. “Look, this is probably the least dangerous trip we have made the whole time we have been here. It’s just going to be vampires and two witches.”

“Two vampires…”, Nathan mounted a protest, but I let go of one of his hands and hushed him with a delicate finger over his lips.

“Actually, there will be six. The four of us and the two of them, but see, I don’t know them, and I am not sure how they will be around a human. So, it is best if you stay here with Amy. Got it?”

This was a question of the rhetorical variety, but the grip I felt on my hand gave me the unnecessary answer. I leaned into him. Pressing my body against his as I inched my lips up to meet his. His pulse quickened, and his grip loosened. I wasn’t using compulsion or any magic for this reaction. This was our own brand of magic. The type any woman who wanted to get her way had used since the start of time, and it usually worked if performed correctly.

My lips brushed his, lightly. Then I said softly, “We will be fine. Mike and Clay have our back.” Then I pressed my lips into his firmly, gently parting his with my own, and then exploring slightly. His hand released mine and found the small of my back. The other was around the back of my neck.

I don’t know how long we were there before Mike said, “We gotta go. I am sure they are already waiting.” I had gotten lost in the moment and found it hard to pull away. Maybe this had backfired. I pulled back away from Nathan and instantly felt the hole where he had been. He was still there, but not like we were. That presence, the one-ness, it was gone, but only for a second.

He pulled me back in for one last kiss, and then said, “Be careful.” His arms let go of me, and I walked backward to the front door, feeling the need to not take my eyes off of him. Luckily, my chances of bumping into anything in my old house were low. Of course, there was the door that I backed right into before I reached behind my back, embarrassed, and grabbed the brass door handle and opened the door.

“I can’t believe that worked,” remarked Mike.

“It will work until the blood returns to his brain,” said Laura and she walked right toward the portal Master Thomas was standing next to just down the front steps. He knew where Theodora was, and since I hadn’t ever been there, I lacked the presence of its place to open a portal to it.
